1. Come up with an imaginary restaurant.
2. Create a menu with at least 5 items each under Side Dishes, Entrees, Beverages and Desserts. Give each item a price that ends in 0 or 5.
3. Create orders for members of your family, noting the total of each person's bill.
4. Figure out the total of everything your family ordered. Then find out how much each person owes, so everyone pays the same amount.
The children are also encouraged to be creative -- design the menu covers or draw a picture of the restaurant. A few children have even made physical dioramas of their new eating establishments!
Whatever they choose to do, the children are having fun with math operations, not only performing the equations but deciding which operation is required for each step. And even better, they'll start paying attention to the prices on the menus when they go out to eat!
